AbstracT

Review of most important issues related to the history and future use of hydrogen for energy purposes will be presented. First idea published in 1970, and later in 1980 by Bockris and Justi in the document: “Wasserstoff, die Energie für alle Zeiten, Konzept einer Sonnen-Wasserstoff-Wirtschaft” will be commented. Next, history of Euro-Quebec-Hydro-Hydrogen Project and World Energy Net-work (WE-NET) research program will be discussed. Against this background, hydrogen strategies for the future will be the subject of consideration.

Properties of hydrogen as a fuel and significant differences in relation to the natural gas, concepts for low-emission generation and use of hydrogen, including power generation will be commented.

Next presented issues concern prospective scale of utilities demand, including water for electrolysis and electricity from renewables, state of the art of hydrogen co-firing and firing technologies developed by heavy duty gas turbine and gas reciprocating engine deliverers. The background will be comment regarding impact of the current economic situation on the possibilities of hydrogen generation and use in power sector.
