Abstract

The new EU Commission GHG emissions targets involve a redaction least 55% by 2030. Energy efficiency is a key component of this process towards decarbonisation, as is increasing the electrification of final energy consumption. As part of energy transition, choice a heat pump system is a preferential solution to be pursued in the building sector. However, increasing energy efficiency and electrifying buildings is complex. Even more, the decarbonisation of the residential sector also presents a criticality, when the keep of radiators is needed, to guarantee the design of heat exchange which requires a high supply temperature. A strategy which allows improving the energy efficiency of so configured plants and involves a share of renewable energy in the service of the plant-building system is to propose a hybrid system (HHP) consisting of a natural gas boiler (NGB) coupled with an air source heat pump (ASHP) or using absorption GHP systems. A further step is represented by the integration of RES, by photovoltaic thermal panels (PVT), which allow to design innovative and affordable solar-assisted heat pumps. In addition, IEA analysis highlights the economic relevance of the Carbon Avoidance Cost (CAC) in the NZE scenario, given the subjection of many countries to CO 2 tax. The research results aim to outline the optimal environmental and economic solution for the renewal of high-temperature systems in existing multifamily buildings in the framework of the Decarbonization pathway where sustainability means saving fossil energy, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing system efficiency alongside cost-effectiveness.
